Shame of illiteracy

A small guy came to, apparently from the impoverished northern part. His dress showed up that. They were worn out, inspite of the neatly washed and combed hair. He came with a piece of paper that had a name and account number written over it. He wanted to deposit some money.

As the practice goes, for the ones who don’t know English, we fill the deposit slip asking them to sign at the bottom. But this guy stood still.

‘I don’t know how to sign’

‘Atleast write your name’. He nodded the head in negative. The boy didn’t know how to write. Apparently it was written somewhere that depositor will have to sign over his name.

I saw the shame spreading across his face.

Today I think education is the main need of time, rest of the things will automatically take care of themselves.
