Sports Appeal

This is about something we have been seeing in our newspapers regularly, but something that we chose to ignore.

Women playing badminton, tennis etc. have been doing very well on the field. We have classic Indian examples-Saina Nehwal, Sania Mirza. And there is also the William sisters.

But why do we have to see photos in the dailies highlighting their sexual appeal. Do we have to market women’s events on sex appeal?

Thanks for pointing this out! When I was young it was just assumed that every sports woman was an aggressive lesbian - I think Chrissy Everett changed that image and since then it has all been about their sex appeal.

People like to see glamorous women everywhere. I guess that must be the employed by the newspaper folk who put up such photos. Sometimes, the pics are rather distasteful too.

hmm..these days u r pointing some hidden issues...nice...lots of thinking going around..good..

indian women player were not considered glamorous or sexy in ealier days...may be because they thmselves dint want to be potrayed like dat...
now the situation has changed..media plus the sportwomen have joined responsibility in their grooming and advertsement...
women have got cautious of their looks and dress...and hence marketing comes easily..

That is the reason that media is losing it's credibility. It is time for media to stop sensationalising issues of no relevance.

Good observation. During the commonwealth games there was a photo of Jwala Gutta playing the match, that appeared in a Malayalam daily here. You could call it vulgar.
