What you say...

Hi.... Haven't been here for a long time. And apologies for I couldn't follow many of your blogs.

I would like to know your reaction if you are caught up in these situations

1. You, your parents and their parents have been staying in a place for a long long time. You have been making a decent living out of the place. You very well know the place is a result of the sweat of your fathers. One day the government discovers that the place you stay in is a solution to all the energy shortage in the world. You are asked to relocate to a slum in a bustling metro.

2. One fine day the government comes up with a startling discovery- the Vatican sits on a mine of invaluable worth. The Vatican has to be demolished for the purpose. Certainly this would mean an industrial leap for human kind

P.S If you are a Muslim you can change the 'Vatican' to 'Mecca'. Or if you're a Sikh to 'Golden Temple' or any other shrine you consider divine. If you are a communist you can change it to 'the grave of Che'

3. The government deploys military in your area. The soldiers doesn't fall under the law of land. Your brothers get beaten up and your sisters get raped. But you can't question the Armed Forces as they are 'protecting' you.

Well these situations aren't fictional but is very much happening in many parts of the world. Tell me what you think of these situations

It is sickening and wrong to happen to anyone. But, only the sufferer is tormented, for the others it is just a newspaper story -- read it and move on. Sometimes, we don't even read about such situations. Today, each one fights their own battles of survival. The world is a selfish place.

Reality is harsh. Assuming that I would be faced with similar situations and wondering what my reaction would be, would be too hypothetical and far from reality!

Like Rachna said, as long as it doesn't happen to us, our immediate family, friends or neighbours, we make a passing note, tch, tch along with the rest of the world, and move on with our own lives!

Case 1: happening to many people where dams are being built. I cannot imagine something like that. Reading Roy's "The Greater Common Good" and it is quite devastating. Have you read it?

Case 2: I can bet on anything it will not happen.

Case 3: I will fight definitely.

I don't know why you raised all these but when I read papers and articles on these kinds of atrocities, I seethe. Sometimes I am numb. I am tired of reacting without any solution.

Joy always,
Susan

Jon I had to give this a lot of thought because I didn't want to seem flippant.

1. From experience I know I would lose any battle against any Govt! Sure I feel bitter but in the end have to go; I have personal experience of having to relocate - and my husband too had similar experiences living in Zimbabwe. It is a sad fact of life - not just of modern times though, throughout history!

2. You can bet your bottom dollar that if the Vatican was sitting on something worth while they would wring every penny of compensation out of whoever was wanting what they had!

3. The last one is the most horrifying and I know happens in a lot of places in the world - what I do is pray that I am too old and ugly for the soldiers to bother with! Selfish I know but in the end its survival.

You have posed a difficult task for readers Jon.. I cannot answer those questions because I haven't been there. It is always easy to say I will do something revolutionary when I am safe in my house...

You just made me think over where humanity is going...

I really don't know what I would do. It is easy to sit and type stuff. One wouldn't know the full impact of it until one is actually put into a situation like that. Can't even imagine....
